“The absence in direct flights hurts growth and the economic, cultural and touristic development of our city,” Coalition Montreal councillor Benoit Dorais said.
“We are here today to offer our support to Montreal’s airport … which is fighting an uphill battle,” councillor Marvin Rotrand said. “Montreal has fallen to fourth place (behind Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary) in the number of passengers it has each year and it’s time our city council took the bull by the horns and got actively involved.”

There are positive signs for Montreal’s airport — traffic at the airport passed 14 million travellers for the first time in 2013. Turkish Airlines and Copa are instituting direct flights to Istanbul and Panama, respectively, and China Air is talking about direct flights to Beijing. But much of Montreal’s growth is due to an increase in flights to sunny vacation destinations, not economic.
